ARCHITECTURES OF HEALTH IN VIENNA

As part of the research project “Architekturen der Gesundheit: zum Wiener Hygienediskurs in medizinischen Fachzeitschriften zwischen 1881 und 1918 (Architectures of Health: on the Viennese Discourse on Hygiene in Medical Journals between 1881 and 1918)”, we systematically examined the holdings of the library of the Gesellschaft der Ärzte in Wien (Society of Physicians in Vienna). We asked about the discursive and practical interaction of medicine and architects in Vienna in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While Vienna was long considered an “unhealthy” city, medical and clinical research made a name for itself internationally as the “Viennese School”. The project aimed to investigate the extent to which architectural and medical discourse in Vienna were intertwined in specialist journals and which aspects of the architectural and urban health discussions found journalistic expression in these periodicals.
Based on the working hypothesis that architects and physicians in Vienna attached great importance to the design of a healthy living environment, our workshop aims to place the results of our statistical and content-related surveys in a larger geographical and cultural context. At the same time, the workshop will serve as an outlook for the further examination of the complex of topics of architecture and health – also beyond the borders of Vienna.
Registration is required until the day before the event.
